Some Family History

Our father’s mother was a Glenrowan lass, Eileen Twamley, who married William Stagg who at that time owned and operated the Waterloo Cup Hotel in Moonee Ponds. William and Eileen had one child, our father Robert William Stagg, who eventually took over the running of the Waterloo Cup Hotel with our mother, Betty. We grew up at the Hotel and it was sold out of the family after nearly 100 years in 1981. The family also owned the Anglers Hotel for several years and it was sold along with the Waterloo Cup. This makes us fourth-generation Hotel keepers – don’t really know what that says about us!

Our great uncle, (Eileen’s brother) was Louis (Lou) Twamley lived on his dairy farm at Angleside, Moyhu. Dad spent much of his childhood and early adolescence with uncle Lou, his extended family and friends in the Moyhu/Glenrowan/Winton areas.

As children we loved to come to Moyhu to stay with Uncle Lou on the farm. We would spend as much time as we could at Unc’s, the biggest thrill when he would harness up old “Snowy” and in the lorry and we would cross the Boggy Creek to feed the cows. Dad always felt Moyhu and Glenrowan were “home”.

It was not until we were all adults that we moved to the North East. Jennifer made the move first with her husband, Graham, followed by Elizabeth, Catherine  and Louise. Louise and her husband Ian moved into Uncle Lou’s farm at Angleside Moyhu.

The opportunity to purchase the Hotel came up in 2005 and the family have run the Hotel since that time.
